Curriculum  The Clark Honors College curriculum balances courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. These courses emphasize the development of fundamental intellectual habits of a liberal arts education – critical thinking, writing, reading, speaking and listening – and complement work in the student’s major. Students who follow the Clark Honors College curriculum fulfill all the university’s general education requirements. This curriculum includes honors college courses and UO courses from approved lists. Depending on test scores, students may use AP or IB credits toward honors college math, science, multicultural and second language requirements, applicable major requirements, or university electives. Clark Honors College students are enrolled in all of the University’s colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business, Education) and Schools (Architecture and Allied Arts, Journalism and Communication, Music and Dance). Our commitment to scientific modes of inquiry is demonstrated by the fact that one of every four Clark Honors College students is a science major.

Thesis  To earn a diploma from Clark Honors College, students must write a thesis in their field of study. Working closely with a professor in their major, each student conducts original research or undertakes a creative project, produces a written thesis, and orally defends the thesis before a faculty committee. Specialized thesis courses and faculty advising assist students with this process.

Admission Criteria  Clark Honors College seeks high achieving students who will bring their own unique contributions to the student body. The Faculty Admission Committee looks for evidence of academic motivation and creative critical thinking. The committee considers several factors in making its decision: SAT or ACT scores, unweighted grade point average, rigor and breadth of coursework, diversity and achievements, two teacher recommendations, an activity summary, and a personal essay.

Number of Faculty and Average Class Size  Twelve resident Clark Honors College faculty members and a number of select guest faculty, invited from the university at large and other universities, teach our classes. CHC resident faculty also serves as advisors. Class size is limited to 25 or fewer students.

Advising  Clark Honors College students are assigned a CHC faculty member who advises them on course scheduling, fulfillment of graduation requirements, and other academic matters both inside and outside the classroom. In addition, the small class size guarantees that each student receives significant personal attention from each of his/her professors.

The College and its Community  Clark Honors College occupies the second and third floors of Chapman Hall and a number of offices in other campus buildings. Clark Honors College has its own library, computer lab, kitchen and lounge, faculty offices, and classrooms – all of which facilitate formal and informal discussions among students and faculty. Tours are available at 10:00 and 1:00 when classes are in session. Three Honors Residence Halls at the University of Oregon also promote community among Clark Honors College students.

Tuition, Fees and Financial Aid  Tuition is the same as for the regular program at the University of Oregon. There is an additional Resource Fee for students in Clark Honors College. For students entering in the 2007-2008 academic year, the fee is $700 per term for the first year, $350 per term the second year, and $250 per term for subsequent terms. Clark Honors College offers a limited number of need-based Resource Fee scholarships. Students wishing to be considered for a Resource Fee scholarship should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Clark Honors College applicants are also eligible for other scholarships offered by the University of Oregon.
