Mentorships
Miss those good old college days? Do you now know a few things that you wish you had known then? Share your valuable wisdom with current Clark Honors College students and gain a chance to help guide them on the path to success!
What is a CHC Mentorship?
While it is our experience that CHC students are very successful in academia, they are often naïve to the world of work. Likewise, many students are so multi-talented and energetic they have a very difficult time choosing educational and career paths. Through one on one relationships with CHC alumni who share their academic major, career aspirations or just plain interests, our program is aimed at helping students to plan for the future and make the most of their college experience.
The CHC Mentorship Program is an opportunity for alumni to stay connected to the honors college by sharing their knowledge and experience with current students. Compared to other mentorship programs, ours is more open ended, requiring as little or as much time as each mentor is willing to commit. Mentors of all ages and careers are welcome, for it is our aim to have as diverse a pool as possible. Likewise, we find that all degrees of wisdom and experience are helpful in lending our students a sense of perspective: on their professional fields of interest, their degree, their education on the whole, and on life. The only thing we ask is that mentors be willing to share their insight.
Each fall we gather and match a large group of students to alumni volunteers. Then, over the course of the school year, we continue to match students as they sign up. We allow both students and alumni to enter the program specifying their level of commitment, and once they are matched, the way the relationship is carried out is up to them, whether via e-mail, in person, or by phone. After the initial match, a mentorship may continue for as long as both sides see fit. Many students develop strong friendships with their mentors and keep in contact for some time. Occasionally, students even gain internship positions through their mentor. At least once a year, the honors college holds a social event to which all mentors and students are invited. This not only provides a chance for students to meet their mentor in person, but for alumni to socialize and remain in contact with the honors college community at large.
CHC Mentorship Program Goals:
- To foster the educational and professional development of CHC students, by providing extra-curricular resources for gaining insight and experience.
- To aid students in the decision-making process through relationships with CHC alumni who share major, and or career choice(s).
- To help students jump-start their own professional networks.
- To provide an opportunity for alumni to remain connected to the CHC, encourage the professional development of students, and tap into the vast talents of CHC students.
