Awards
Even among a high-achieving body of students, some students stand out for the originality and passion they bring to the pursuit of their goals. Clark Honors College faculty recognize these exceptional students in a variety of ways. The past recipients of these awards, honors, and scholarships have made the most of their opportunities at the CHC.
Commencement and Thesis Awards
Each spring, between seven and twelve graduating seniors are recognized with a thesis award. These students successfully tackled ambitious projects, and excelled in the oral defense as well as with the written thesis. In addition, the faculty select a commencement speaker from among the very top students of Clark Honors College, looking for students who have not only excelled academically, but thrived in the CHC community. A banner carrier, who leads the procession of graduating students, is recognized for leadership within CHC.
Essay Awards
As freshmen or sophomores, all students complete a research seminar in either literature or history in the spring, in which they write a paper based on original research in primary sources. The best research essays are honored the next fall.
Dean's List
The quarterly Clark Honors College Dean's List names students who have performed exceptionally well in the previous quarter's classes, earning a term GPA of at least 3.75 with a course load of at least 15 credits (12 graded). These students receive a letter of congratulations from the dean of the Clark Honors College.
Scholarships
Alumni generosity enables the CHC to offer a number of merit-based internal CHC scholarships, each recognizing a different facet of the life of a CHC student.
University Honors
Clark Honors College students also do well in competitive university scholarships. We often have a number of students among the Oregon Six, chosen by Phi Beta Kappa as the most exceptional students of a graduating class. Other students may hold Presidential or Diversity Excellence Scholarships, or have been selected from among PathwayOregon students to receive full scholarships that cover housing as well as tuition and fees. CHC students can also graduate with Latin honors, based on the GPA, or with departmental honors.
