Thesis Style and Format Guide

Your final thesis will be bound and archived in both the Robert D. Clark Library and the Knight Library. As such, you’ll need to follow the format and layout requirements below.

FORMAT GUIDELINES

To be sure the thesis can be bound and archived, here are some guidelines for formatting and printing the two final thesis copies.

  • Text is double-spaced (single spacing may be used for quotes or text cited within the manuscript).
  • Print on one side only
  • Margins are: 1-1/2 inches on left side; 1 inch on other three sides.
  • Page numbers are:
    • in the upper right-hand corner,
    • 1” in from the side and 1” down from the top.
    • Prefatory pages are lowercase Roman numerals
    • Text pages are Arabic numerals
  • Paper is a minimum 25 percent cotton rag content
  • Printing is clear and readable

Detailed formatting guidelines can be found here.

LAYOUT OF THESIS

Pages should appear in the following order. For a sample of some of the following pages, follow the Sample Format (note that you’ll need to use the “back” button on your browser to return to this website).

  • Front Flyleaf (blank, 25 percent cotton bond)
  • Title Page (no page number)
  • Copyright Page (optional, Roman numeral if used)
  • Abstract (page ii, or iii if copyrighted)
  • Acknowledgments and/or Dedication (page iii)
  • Table of Contents (page iv)
  • Lists of Tables, Graphs, Figures, Plates, Illustrations, etc. (if included, page v, etc.)
  • Text of Thesis (begin Arabic pagination; first page has no number, then 2, 3, etc.)
  • Appendix or appendices (if included)
  • Endnotes (if not placed as footnotes or at the end of each chapter)
  • Bibliography
  • Back Flyleaf (blank, 25 percent cotton bond)

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING THE FINAL CREATIVE OR PERFORMANCE THESIS

The thesis sometimes takes the form of a performance project, such as an exhibit, a recital, or the production of a play, but in all cases students produce a text of some length.

  • Texts range widely in length, but average about 25-40 pages. They should be a minimum of 20 pages.
  • Students may choose to record their performance and include DVDs with their final thesis copies.
  • Paintings/photographs can be included in color photocopy form but must be on archival paper and conform to the margin limits.
  • Programs or posters can be submitted with the final thesis draft and will be included in the bound copies in pocket inserts at the end.
  • Usually any unusual creative products can be included with the final thesis text copies, but please consult with the CHC Academic Coordinator to ensure these will be set up well for the binding process.
