Bella Albiani standing in front of a brick building's landscaping

Name: Bella Albiani
Hometown: Elk Grove, California
Major/Intended Major: Global Studies

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

I loved the idea of a tight-knit honors community. Moreover, I was excited to hear about the resources and research opportunities available to students.

What’s in your fridge?

Right now, it’s pretty bare. Just some iced tea, summer squash and melon.

Coffee or tea?

Definitely tea. I have a cup pretty much every morning. It warms me up, readies me for the day and reminds me of home.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I feel like that’s a really heavy question that I’m not sure I have the answer to yet. Right now, I’m focusing on incorporating intention and mindfulness into my daily life, ensuring that I am being present and my actions are purposeful. I believe that intentionality manifests as a tool for meaningful change.

Who is your role model?

My mom. She is extremely passionate about reading and recently started a free bookstore at our local food bank. The bookstore has already given out over 2,000 books to low-income children.

Laine Bell standing in front of green ivy, trees, and shrubs

Name: Lainie Bell
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
Major: Marine Biology

Why did you apply to CHC?

I was interested in the built-in community that comes with a smaller college within the university, and I wanted to try a new style of education. I'm interested to see how the liberal arts elements of the CHC will contrast with my major.

What’s in your fridge?

Right now, my fridge is pretty empty because I’m really taking advantage of my meal points. Normally, I would have a lot of La Croix seltzer in there.

Coffee or tea?

I prefer tea (Matcha specifically). My roommate is a barista so she’s slowly converting me to coffee, though.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I’m interested in coral restoration, so I want to change the way we think about our coral reefs and make discoveries that will inform us about how to protect them.

Who is your role model?

My brother. Recently, he moved out of the country for graduate school, and I really admire how he took such a big step to pursue something he's passionate about. He also gives great advice, which is super helpful.

William Bird standing at a campus in autumn.

Name: William Bird
Hometown: Hollis, New Hampshire
Major/Intended Major: Marine Biology

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

So that I could push myself further academically and explore the novelties of unique, uninhibited classes.

What’s in your fridge?

Chai concentrate, almond milk, pumpkin chai concentrate, grapes, and clementines.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I would really like to develop bio-remediation technology to help with the Earth’s many environmental disasters.

Who is your role model?

Rachel Carlson

Maddy Carson standing in front of a marble and brick pillar.

Name: Maddy Carson
Hometown: Wilsonville, Oregon
Major/Intended Major: Psychology and Family & Human Services

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

Because it is a learning environment that will allow me to further pursue my values of passion, inquiry, and impact. Also, to be challenged by the questions of my fellow classmates and professors, make connections with a diverse group of students, and participate in a wide range of unique academic opportunities.

What’s in your fridge?

To be honest, my fridge is not very exciting as it usually consists of my roommate’s oat milk for coffee, as well as a few cans of soda for when people come over.

Coffee or tea?

Peppermint tea always!

What change do you want to make in the world?

I am passionate about improving the experience of hospitalized children through animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and pediatric professional empathy training. To achieve this goal, I aspire to be the change I wish to see in the world by eventually developing an empathy-centered training program for medical professionals prior to their graduation. As a result of the program’s curriculum, future physicians and nurses would be learning valuable personal skills, enabling them to better connect with and treat pediatric patients.

Who is your role model?

My 95-year-old grandfather, Dr. John Carson, or, as I like to call him, “Chocolate Grandpa.” This nickname is inspired by our shared love for all things chocolate! Besides our shared sweet tooth, I respect and look up to my grandfather because there has never been a moment that he has not encouraged me to pursue an education that allows me to be the change I wish to see in the world.

Beatrice Kahn standing in front of a library shelf.

Name: Beatrice Kahn
Hometown: Beaverton, Oregon
Major/Intended Major: History

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

Because of the sense of community and the opportunity to take specialized classes early on in my college career, such as Shakespeare and politics.

What’s in your fridge?

My fridge ideally has a ripe avocado, Nancy's yogurt and GT's ginger berry kombucha.

Coffee or tea?

I drink both tea and coffee. I love a good matcha and the occasional latte – just not in the same day.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I am considering a career in law, so a change that I hope to make would be related to the legal world, possibly within the criminal justice system.

Who is your role model?

My grandma, Brenda, because she has been an educator for her entire life and her joy for learning inspires me. She has her own garden and I admire her green thumb.

Bryce Mayer standing in front of brutalist architecture.

Name: Bryce Mayer
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
Major/Intended Major: Biology

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

I liked how it combines students from almost every discipline offered at UO to collaborate and work through interdisciplinary topics in a small, liberal arts format.

What’s in your fridge?

Lots of Dr. Pepper, some apples and pizza my mom insisted I have for some reason.

Coffee or tea?

Tea! Coffee is for old people and is super bitter. Definitely not how I want to start my day. Good tea, on the other hand, is refreshing and energizing.

What change do you want to make in the world?

Helping it become more sustainable. We only have one Earth and we’re entirely dependent on it for our health and well-being. I’m confident that I, along with millions of other people, can work to be leaders in our communities. We can help better educate and innovate on sustainable practices in order to ensure that our world will be healthy for generations to come. I also want to make the Utah Jazz a desirable free agent destination, but I should probably try to be realistic.

Who is your role model?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Not only did Kareem play basketball at a world-class level with unmatched longevity and an un-guardable shot, but he was also a leader in the fight for social justice. He fought tirelessly for racial and religious equality and diversity using his platform as an NBA and collegiate superstar.

Marisol Peters standing in front of a dark building entrance cover

Name: Marisol Peters
Hometown: Austin, Texas
Major/Intended Major: Architecture

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

I love finding connections between things I am passionate about. I think that architecture is a field that can be connected to everything in our lives. I want to explore all the random subjects you would never think are related and connect them.

What’s in your fridge?

I have leftover birthday pumpkin pie and oat milk creamer, as well as almost too much Yerba Mate.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee, every time. I love coffee and drink it every morning.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I want to make the world more accessible. As the child of a disabled parent and a future architect, I see the solutions to accessibility in the field of architecture. Architects design the space in which we exist and thus control how accessible the world can be, and it can always be more accessible.

Who is your role model?

An artist named Ellsworth Kelly, who designed a piece called Austin, which is my favorite art piece ever made. I look up to Kelly because of how much care and thought he put into the piece, from orientation to materials to the specifics of the windowpanes. He inspires me to care deeply about the art I make and to keep following projects until I am happy with them.

Micah Primack standing in front of a brick building

Name: Micah Primack
Hometown: Corvallis, Oregon
Major/Intended Major: Psychology and Music

Why did you choose to apply to CHC?

Because of its commitment to interdisciplinary education. I want to study psychology and music, two fairly unrelated fields. I love that the CHC not only allows me but supports me in my interdisciplinary endeavors.

What’s in your fridge?

Really good tofu jerky that my roommate got me. Some leftover ramen, as well.

Coffee or tea?

Not really sure if this counts but sweet tea.

What change do you want to make in the world?

I want to revolutionize therapy and mental health treatment through music. Mostly everyone has a deeply profound and intimate connection to the kind of music they love, and I want to use that fact to help people.

Who is your role model?

Andrew Marlin of the band “Watchhouse.” He is an amazing mandolinist and songwriter, and I absolutely try to emulate him in my own work.

Name: Tarini Ramasamy

I never applied. I was automatically accepted through the Stamps program.

Nothing.

Homemade versions of both.

What change do you want to make in the world?

Highlighting the stories of under-represented communities.
