Professor: Lydia Van Dreel

4.00 credits

  • CRN 15674: Tuesday & Thursday, 12:00-1:20pm @ LIB 42

In this seminar, we will explore music as a function of culture. Students will have the opportunity to learn how music expresses community and belonging, storytelling, mood and place, spirituality, individualism, counterculture, rebellion, and political discourse. Interdisciplinary readings will accompany deep listening experiences, both recorded and live, from diverse cultures, eras, and idioms. Students will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of how music creates meaning in their own lives and communities, and in the greater landscapes of media, art, and society.
