HC 441H – Participatory Science

Professor: Kristen Rahilly

4 credits

Registration for this section of HC 441H is limited to students with sophomore or junior standing. If you are a student with senior standing who must take this specific HC 441H section to graduate, please reach out to Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Daphne Gallagher (daphne@uoregon.edu).

What if participating in real scientific research was open to anyone who was interested? Participatory Science, formerly known as “citizen science”, is the idea that the scientific process is made better through the participation of all. The Association for Participatory Sciences says it best: “Together we advance the field”. Did you know that you can help researchers better understand how blood flow in the brain may impact Alzheimer’s? Or decipher how clouds appear from Earth’s surface vs. from space? Or help train AI to better identify marine life? Students will design their own unique science research project using participatory science or other publicly available datasets. All students will present the initial stages of their project during the poster session at the Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 7 (poster session overlaps with course time).
