Communications is a field of inquiry that provides students with concepts, knowledge, and needed skills to analyze and understand the dynamics of intercultural relations, interactions, and/or conflicts. In this course, students explore the multiple meanings of “culture” and examine how culture contributes to our understanding of the global world we live in.

The course is designed to look at the practical application of theory and research through multiple case studies that may include regions like the Middle East, Latin America, and North Africa. It also offers the opportunity to look critically at the process by which meanings and messages are shared and interpreted between cultures. By emphasizing the influence of culture on the communication process, this course covers general topics that may include identity, perception, cultural values, pop culture, representation, and stereotyping.
