About one volcano erupts worldwide each week. That's around 50 - 60 eruptions on Earth per year. Each volcanic eruption has two stories - the data story and the human story. The data story gives us clues as to what might be happening scientifically at the volcano. First person narratives center the stories of those that experience the impacts of volcanic eruptions. In this class, we will examine these two stories - the data and the human. We will focus our efforts on recent eruptions through case studies and independent research projects. Students will also be assigned to create weekly summaries of two volcanoes that have been identified as being in a state of unrest by the global scientific community, resulting in a presentation at the end of the term.
