April Events in the CHC

daffodils outside chapman hall

Spring is officially here, although the masses of daffodils that line the lawn behind Chapman Hall have been broadcasting its arrival with their sunny faces for some weeks now. Students and faculty are turning their attention to the final term of the academic year – for many students, the last chapter in their undergraduate education. With 192 thesis defenses scheduled between now and June, Chapman Hall is going to be a very busy place!

The term kicks off with two exciting events that I want to share with you:

Thursday April 11, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. – Courtney Thorsson and The Sisterhood

The Clark Honors College, UO Alumni Association, and the UO Black Alumni Network will host Courtney Thorsson, CHC core faculty member and associate professor of English, for an engaging and thought-provoking virtual discussion about the transformative power of literature and collaboration. Professor Thorsson will read from her new groundbreaking work, The Sisterhood: How a Network of Black Women Writers Changed American Culture. The webinar will be an enlightening exploration of Black feminist collaboration and its enduring impact on American culture. Register today for this opportunity to engage with Professor Thorsson and learn about the powerful network that changed the literary landscape.

Thursday April 25, 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. – CHC Three Minute Thesis Competition

The CHC is holding its second-annual Three Minute Thesis Competition in Lillis Hall, Room 282. The Three Minute Thesis Competition is an exciting and fun event that allows CHC students who are defending a thesis in the 2023-24 academic year to share their thesis projects with a broader audience, hone their presentation skills, and win cash prizes of up to $750. During the competition, students will have three minutes to present the idea behind their thesis project, using only a single slide. Finalists will be selected through competitive preliminary rounds. Ten of them will compete for cash prizes during the final competition. A reception will follow in the Lillis Atrium. Details about the 2024 event can be found on the CHC website. If you are able to join us, RSVP here by April 22.

I look forward to sharing more of the celebratory happenings in the CHC with you as we move toward summer.

Sincerely, Carol Stabile
Acting Dean

P.S. We invite you to tell us how your CHC thesis project contributed to the job you have today, or your career.  Send us your story via this short Qualtrics form. We look forward to reading it!
