This social science colloquium uses a “solutions journalism” lens to explore evidence-based responses to the most vexing issues facing our society and planet today. Solutions journalism combats growing cynicism and mistrust of the media by reporting solutions that work. Students will identify a “wicked problem” from their discipline — such as the climate for environmental science students, or homelessness for public policy or psychology students — and then conduct research to empathetically and critically evaluate an evidenced-based response to the problem. Research will include primary and secondary data collection and analysis. Students will present their research in a traditional conference-style poster presentation.
