HC 101H - Making Space for Our Stories: Immigrant and Refugee Experiences of Coming to America

Professor: Yalda Asmatey

4 credits

This first-year seminar offers an exciting opportunity to explore both the lives of others and your own. Through graphic memoirs and personal narratives, we will engage with immigrants and refugees’ experiences to uncover stories of belonging, trauma, resilience, and the pursuit of what is known as the American Dream. These narratives challenge assumptions and invite us to see the world through new perspectives. Alongside our reading, we will develop writing as a tool for self-discovery and social change. This course is not only about understanding others’ experiences, but also about learning to articulate your own history, identity, and voice. Together, we will build a supportive environment grounded in reflection, discussion, and shared storytelling. By the end of the course, you will have strengthened your ability to express your ideas while fostering empathy and deeper understanding within your CHC cohort
