This course examines the evolving legal standards in civil rights in higher education. Through a series of readings, guided discussions, and student-generated presentations, students will explore core civil rights that are subject to dispute on college campuses, including free speech, the right to privacy in dorms, due process, discrimination law, and academic freedom. When can faculty be fired for posting on social media, or for improper comments in the classroom? When can students be disciplined for participating in protests? Focusing on cases, students will explore extensively these questions and related rules that govern the First Amendment and demonstrations on campus. The course will consist of interactive lectures in which student participation is required.
