This course introduces the historical and social contexts shaping Muslim communities, from early African Muslim arrivals in the Americas to the diverse populations that define contemporary American Muslim life. It examines how Muslim identities are formed, represented, and contested, with attention to race, gender, migration, and community development. Through analysis of institutions, media, and public discourse, students will explore how narratives about Muslims are produced and how they relate to broader patterns of marginalization in the United States and elsewhere. The course also considers the lasting impact of post-9/11 policies and cultural shifts on everyday life.
