If you were to Google a geologist, you'd likely find images of people on mountaintops with rock hammers and hard hats. However, in this course, we will explore the science behind the world around us through a physically accessible focus on the geology of the University of Oregon campus. We will visit one location on campus per week such as art installations, the Willamette River, and Hayward Field. Students will be field geologists: taking pictures, creating sketches, collecting quantitative data, and collaboratively piecing together the geologic significance of features we walk by every day by using the scientific literature to support their own observations. The final project will be a course-wide virtual tour communicating the geology behind features on campus.
