Petitions

CHC Course Substitutions & Requirement Exceptions are adjudicated by a petition process that allows students to have non-standard course material reviewed for possible substitution or an exception to an academic requirement for graduation.

Remember: You don't need to file a petition for independent study credits related to the thesis or for study abroad credits that you wish to use for your guaranteed elective colloquium substitution. Instead, you can just fill out the Notification Form for Independent Thesis and Study Abroad Credits. The form is accepted on a rolling basis. Degree guide changes are submitted to the registrar in batches twice per term, so depending on when your credits were submitted, it may take a few weeks for them to appear on your degree guide.

Requirement exceptions and course substitutions beyond the guaranteed study abroad course substitution require the submission of a detailed petition that presents compelling evidence for why the exception or substitution should be granted. Students are advised to carefully review the instructions on the first page of the petition Qualtrics form, as well as the CHC Guidelines for Course Substitution Petitions, and then meet with their CHC Advisor to determine if a 300-level course and above, taken outside of the Clark Honors College and their major/minor, with around 20 students in the class, would be eligible to be petitioned to substitute for a Colloquium or Colloquium Elective, or to be considered a petition for an exception.

Use the Course Substitution and Requirement Exception Petition form to submit your petition.

CHC petitions are accepted on a rolling basis, but they must be completed by the end of Week 3 of the term in order for a decision to be made on those petitions by the end of Week 7 (that is, prior to the opening of next term's registration).

Course substitutions and requirement exceptions will be noted on the degree guide by the end of the term during which they were submitted.
