The Clark Honors College employs undergraduate  Peer Mentors for the CHC Peer Mentoring Program offered through the CHC Residential Community. The Peer Mentor is a part-time, stipended student position. Peer Mentors will provide academic and personal support for first-year CHC students by hosting open drop-in hours in the CHC RC pod, organizing and hosting events and activities, and curating pertinent information to support CHC’s first-year students. Peer mentors work under the direct supervision of the CHC’s Director of First-Year Experience, Dr. Angela Rovak.

The CHC Peer Mentor position offers students an excellent opportunity for professional growth and leadership that is both challenging and rewarding. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, maturity, reliability, and discretion, as well as a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. CHC Peer Mentors are appointed for a full academic year, with the possibility of renewal. The application is available at the start of Spring term and will be circulated to all current CHC students. 

A First-Year Programs and Communication Assistant position is also available for the 2025-2026 academic year and will support the Peer Mentor program. See the full description below.

What do Peer Mentors do?

Peer Mentors provide vital support for new students by sharing their own unique experiences in college, answering questions about campus life and academic goals, guiding mentees to important resources and referrals on campus, and promoting the growth of the student community within the Clark Honors College. 

Who should apply to be a Peer Mentor?

Any continuing CHC student in good academic standing who will have completed at least two terms in the CHC by the position start date is encouraged to apply. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, maturity, reliability, and discretion, as well as a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Position Description for Clark Honors College Peer Mentors (2025-26)

Position Overview

The Clark Honors College seeks undergraduate Peer Mentors for the CHC Peer Mentoring Program offered through the CHC Residential Community. The Peer Mentor is a part-time, stipended student position. Peer Mentors will provide academic and personal support for first-year CHC students during the 2025-26 academic year. Peer mentors work under the direct supervision of the CHC’s Director of First-Year Experience.

This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, maturity, reliability, and discretion, as well as a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Peer Mentor appointments are made for the 2025-26 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for the 2026-27 academic year. 

Responsibilities

CHC Peer Mentor Responsibilities:

  • Provide Peer Mentor services to first-year CHC students for a minimum of 5 hours of mentoring contact time per week from Week 1 to Week 10 of Fall term, and 3 hours of mentoring contact time per week from Week 1 to Week 10 of Winter and Spring terms.
  • Attend one CHC first-year community event each academic term
  • Host drop-in style office hours during peak registration times on Fridays of Weeks 5, 6, and 7 of each academic term
  • Be available and participate in person in CHC Peer Mentor training and orientation prior to the start of Fall term (September 15 – 24, 2025).
  • Be available and participate in person in the CHC New Student Welcome (NSW) held during Week of Welcome (week prior to start of Fall term; September 26, 2025).
  • Provide proactive outreach to CHC first-year students, including but not limited to: email, phone, or chat connections
  • Facilitate mentees’ understanding of CHC curricular requirements, thesis process, and exclusive CHC opportunities
  • Provide personal, attentive, and professional support to students with academic or personal concerns, and make referrals to other campus units or services as needed
  • Provide experience, support, and guidance on collegiate-level success skills such as study-habits, building professional relationships, getting involved with research, balancing social activities, finding organizations to participate in, etc.
  • Assist mentees with identifying their CHC and departmental advisors and prepare students to have productive meetings with those advisors
  • Assist mentees with developing strategies for combining CHC requirements, major requirements, and other opportunities like internships and study abroad
  • Assist mentees with identifying and mitigating concerns that are barriers to academic success and provide appropriate referrals to student support services as required
  • Attend Peer Mentor orientation sessions during the Spring 2025 term and during the Fall 2025 Week of Welcome (detailed above) as well as Peer Mentor staff meetings during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms 

Qualifications

In order to be eligible for the CHC Peer Mentor position, candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in the Clark Honors College in good standing
  • Have a minimum of two-terms of experience as a CHC student by Fall 2025
  • Maintain full-time student status for the duration of employment
  • Commit to position for full academic year (2025-26)
  • Plan to be in residence at UO during the entire 2025-26 academic year (must not study abroad or go on leave during Fall, Winter, or Spring of the 2025-26 academic year)
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, maturity, and reliability
  • Be committed to working with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Be able to work in a discreet manner with sensitive and confidential information
  • Be able to be available to respond to mentee questions and contact within 24-48 hours of receipt
  • Be able to attend and participate in Peer Mentor training sessions during Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 Week of Welcome
  • Be able to attend and participate in CHC New Student Welcome during Fall 2025 Week of Welcome
  • Be able to attend staff meetings each term (Fall, Winter, and Spring), which will be scheduled by term based on Peer Mentor course schedules
  • Adhere to best student support practices covered in training sessions
  • Adhere to and role model (on and/or off campus) University policy as well as, federal, state, and local laws
  • Be eligible to work in the United States

Compensation

A stipend of $1,875 for the 2025-26 academic year, broken down per term: Fall ($750); Winter ($450) and Spring ($450) with an additional $225 stipend for Week of Welcome training and New Student Welcome programming paid alongside Fall term stipend.

Position Overview

The Clark Honors College seeks a First-Year Program and Communications Assistant for the CHC Peer Mentor Program offered through the CHC Residential Community. The Program and Communications Assistant is a part-time, stipended student position. This role will provide event coordination, program support, and communication implementation in coordination with the CHC Peer Mentor Program and the CHC First-Year Experience. The First-Year Program and Communications Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the CHC’s Director of First-Year Experience.

This position offers students an excellent opportunity for professional growth and leadership that is both challenging and rewarding. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, creativity, and reliability. The appointment is made for the 2025-26 academic year, with the possibility of renewal for the 2026-27 academic year.
 

Responsibilities

CHC First-Year Program and Communications Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Provide event planning and communication execution for a minimum of 5 hours per week from Week 1 to Week 10 of Fall term, and 3 hours per week from Week 1 to Week 10 of Winter and Spring terms.
  • Coordinate and advertise three first-year community events per academic term
  • Create social media and other graphics/advertisements for events and programs
  • Maintain the CHC Peer Mentor Instagram account and monitor the CHC Peer Mentor email account
  • Create and disseminate a First-Year Experience newsletter to be sent biweekly to the CHC first-year cohort
  • Coordinate with the CHC Communications team as needed
  • Coordinate with the CHC Assistant Dean of Admissions, Recruitment, and Belonging as needed
  • Be available and participate in person in CHC Peer Mentor training and orientation prior to the start of Fall term (September 15 – 24, 2025)
  • Be available and participate in person in the CHC New Student Welcome (NSW) held during Week of Welcome (week prior to start of Fall term; September 26, 2025).
