The new Black Studies minor has been in development at the College of Arts and Sciences for more than two years, and was finalized last spring for implementation this fall. However, its roots extend to 1968, when members of the Black Student Union, spurred on by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., put in one of the first formal letters to the UO Administration demanding recognition of racism on campus and imploring change. The image below is the first page of that same letter. The links are to articles that articulate this history well, as well as the Provost's new Diversity Plan, which was released in mid-October, 2020.
