HC301H - The Art of the Interview and Writing News Profiles

Professor: Dave Austin

4.00 credits

CRN 12274: Monday & Wednesday, 4:00-5:20pm @ CHA 202

One of the most engaging and artful ways to bring someone to life is through profile writing. Everyone has a story to tell, and there is a dramatic, thoughtful, and impactful narrative behind every individual. Done right, an effective profile explores the many facets of a person’s life, explores their purpose, examines their roots, and reveals the complexity of their character. It also engages, entertains, and helps the reader understand how the subjects fit into this world. In this class, students will learn best practices for profile writing: conducting in-depth research on a person, interviewing them and other relevant sources, and writing a journalistic piece as a final project. There will also be chances for students to have work published during the term.
