This course will delve into the history, theory, and techniques of film-form related to conventional and experimental narrative cinema, with particular emphasis on short films. We will read about, discuss and watch several films and film excerpts to develop a framework for comparing conventional films to films that diverge from conventional formats, such as short live-action fiction films, commercials, long-form advertisements, music videos, animated shorts, and experimental film and video art. We will discuss the ways in which conventional film narratives often follow a cause-and-effect pattern, while short and experimental films deviate from convention through formal and conceptual innovation and experimentation. As a unique aspect of this class, it will culminate in the opportunity for students to write, produce, and screen their own short films as a final project - this hands-on experience will allow you to apply the concepts we've discussed throughout the course and gain practical insights into the art of filmmaking.
