This course explores a range of classical civilizations’ descriptions of mental health and mental illness, their physical and supernatural/religious explanations for emotional and behavioral deviance, and how people with non-normative experiences were treated by their communities. We will seek cross-cultural comparisons and contrasts, and look for the roots of modern psychiatry and psychology.
